The Late Sir A. L. Mudaliar Memorial Travelling Fellowship

This fellowship gives young members the opportunity to visit any postgraduate teaching and research centre in India specialising in Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Family Planning, or Human Reproduction. Over a study visit of up to 15 days, the fellow gains hands-on exposure to specialised practice in areas such as gynaecological endoscopy, fetal medicine, high-risk obstetrics, infertility, or gynaecological oncology, and then shares that learning with the OGSSI community.

Sir A. L. Mudaliar, one of India's most distinguished obstetricians and educationists, was the first President of OGSSI. Born in Kurnool in 1887, he was one of the famed "Arcot twins" of Madras, along with his brother Sir Arcot Ramaswami Mudaliar. He served the Government Hospital for Women and Children, Egmore, for over 35 years and became the first Indian Principal of Madras Medical College. Students from across India and abroad came to train under him, and his textbook "Clinical Obstetrics," first published in 1938, guided generations of medical students. He was the longest-serving Vice-Chancellor of Madras University, holding the post for 27 years, and chaired the Secondary Education Commission, known as the Mudaliar Commission. Internationally, he chaired the WHO Executive Board and later served as President of the Fourteenth World Health Assembly. He was knighted in 1945 and received the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan.
